Quarterly Estimated Taxes: A Simple Guide for the Self-Employed

Because taxes aren't withheld from your freelance income, the IRS expects you to pay as you earn — in four quarterly installments. Miss them and you can owe penalties even if you pay in full by April.

Who needs to pay?

Generally, if you expect to owe $1,000 or more in tax for the year, you should make quarterly estimated payments.

2026 quarterly deadlines

  • Q1: April 15, 2026
  • Q2: June 15, 2026
  • Q3: September 15, 2026
  • Q4: January 15, 2027

How to calculate each payment

Estimate your annual net profit, apply self-employment tax (15.3%) plus your income tax bracket, then divide by four. Our free calculator does this in seconds.

Never miss a deadline

MoneyFeed estimates each quarter's payment from your real income and expenses, keeps a running "tax jar" target, and sends a WhatsApp reminder before every due date — so a penalty never sneaks up on you.
